about

Richard X Bennett’s third Ropeadope release is a ambitious foray into a world of ambient futuristic piano. Inspired by cigarettes, insomnia, meditation, death and France, this is a mostly rhythmless evocation of a lonely planet. The piano is often electronically altered, sometimes subtly and sometimes overtly. One can hear a relaxed jazz phrasing in the presentation of the melodies as well as Bennett’s raga background in his use of unusual scales. He has also designed the electronics which frame the piano, with the exception of Loss and Gain and Planet AT which are duos with modular synthesist Angus Tarnawsky. The mood is lightened with a three part series of songs for melodica, “Sans Paroles”. All of the pieces are original except Elton John’s Bennie and the Jets which receives a distorted reimagining. Completing the set are two imaginative remixes by the English electronica collective HUW.

Bennett considers Away From the Many to be the completion of a trilogy. He says, “Experiments With Truth is music for action; What is Now is music for seduction; Away From the Many is music for contemplation and reflection. It’s what I play when no one is listening.”
